However, successful automation depends on well-trained employees who thoroughly understand the function and operation of automated machinery.

Today’s industrial processes have become increasingly technical and complex. Robotics and automated processes have revolutionized the way products are manufactured creating the need for highly qualified engineers and technicians equipped with the skills to design, implement, troubleshoot and service this complex technology.

Tech-Labs offers technical training equipment and curriculum from Amatrol’s Advanced Manufacturing program. Amatrol’s industry-leading equipment and curriculum are developed in partnership with industry to deliver job-ready, industry-relevant skills. Working closely with companies like Caterpillar, Tropicana, and many others Amatrol has designed equipment for workplace success. The automation learning systems are continually changing to allow students to gain hands-on experience with the technology that they will see on the plant floor.

Automation Learning Systems

The extensive line of automation learning systems developed by Amatrol focus on two main areas: robots and programmable logic controllers (PLC), specifically their function and application within automated production lines. The learning systems within this area take a building block approach to skill development, beginning with rudimentary topics like basic robot operation and basic component adjustment before moving to more advanced topics like serial device applications and multiple station control. These technical education training systems are vital parts of Amatrol programs like packaging, industrial maintenance, STEM, and more!

Amatrol's automation learning systems combine hearty curriculum packed full of on-the-job knowledge with real-world industrial components for exceptional hands-on skill-building. Many of these systems also feature fault troubleshooting so that students can understand how to recognize common system problems and malfunctions and how to correct them..

Amatrol's Automation courses demonstrate how automation impacts our lives and cover general automation principles, components, and applications with a focus on two of the most influential automation tools, programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and robots.

Robot Learning Systems

Amatrol’s robot learning systems feature the Pegasus II (880-RA2-1-B), which has an open arm design that supports hands-on knowledge application and skill development. While small in size, the Pegasus is a giant when it comes to teaching and learning capabilities. Within the Robotics and Computer Programming 1 system (94-RCP1) and the add-on Flexible Manufacturing 1 (94-FMS1A) and 2 (94-FMS2), major topics include:

  • Application Development
  • Production Control
  • Point-to-Point Assembly
  • Palletizing
  • Pneumatic Robot Control
  • And More!

In addition to hands-on skill-building with an actual Pegasus robot, Amatrol also offers simulation software for the Pegasus robots. Learners can practice the same technical skills in a simulated environment as they would with an actual robot.

Programmable Logic Controllers and Mechatronics

Programmable logic controllers are arguably the most important component in advanced manufacturing. Amatrol features the two industry leaders in PLCs in Allen-Bradley and Siemens, specifically the AB CompactLogix L16 and the Siemens S7-300 series. Within Amatrol’s automation systems, PLCs are integrated with mechatronics stations to recreate an actual automated line in your classroom.

Amatrol’s mechatronics choices includes both a Large Scale Mechatronics Line, which features a robust nine carts, and a Tabletop Mechatronics line for customers that have more restricted classroom space or need to transport the learning system between multiple venues. The large scale line covers topics like:

  • Pick and Place Feeding
  • Gauging
  • Orientation Processing
  • Sorting / Buffering
  • Servo Robotic Assembly
  • Torque Assembly
  • Inventory Storage
  • CNC Mill
  • Electro-Hydraulic Testing

This line also features a large assortment of add-on systems like:

There is also an option to purchase an integration package to substitute the Pegasus II robot used with the Servo-Robotic Assembly station with a customer-supplied Fanuc 200iD/4S robot.

Amatrol’s tabletop mechatronics learning system features four stations and utilizes an Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1000 PLC. This system covers topics like automation operation, sorting, distribution, inspection, indexing, and inventory.

High School Options for Automation Training

In addition to learning systems geared toward post-secondary and industrial customers, Amatrol also offers systems specifically designed for high schools. One of the biggest challenges facing the workforce today is a skilled worker shortage. Because of this, Amatrol is dedicated to providing high schools with learning solutions that will cover applicable STEM knowledge and advanced manufacturing topics and skills. High School learning systems within the automation area include:

Automated Inventory Training Station

Amatrol’s 87-MS7, Inventory Storage, is station 7 of the 870 Mechatronics Learning System. Designed for Mechatronics technician training, the 87-MS7 station is a small mechatronics system in itself with multiple, integrated technologies that can be used stand-alone or in combination with other stations. Industrial safety and operation are emphasized on all Amatrol mechatronic stations.

The Inventory Storage station teaches automated manufacturing inventory, including interfacing, problem-solving, programming, sequencing and operation for pick and place storage, pneumatic grippers and brakes, infrared sensors, and a programmable pneumatic traverse module. This mobile training workstation sorts the completed assemblies of working industrial directional control valves and trains on part retrieval methods.

The 87-MS7 is a mobile workstation with slotted work surface that contains:

  • Operator station
  • Programmable position pneumatic robot
  • 4-channel parts storage module
  • Parts presentation module
  • Pneumatic distribution module
  • Electrical distribution module
  • Electro-pneumatic valve manifold
  • Digital I/O interface module

Mechatronics Sorting and Buffering Mobile Training Station

Amatrol’s 87-MS4, Sorting-Buffering, is training mobile workstation 4 of the 870 Mechatronics Learning System. The 87-MS4 station is a small mechatronics system in itself with multiple, integrated technologies that can be used stand-alone or in combination with other stations. Industrial safety and operation are emphasized on all Amatrol mechatronic stations.

The Sorting-Buffering training station teaches interfacing, problem-solving, programming, sequencing and operation for sorting, queuing, flat belt conveyors, photoelectric sensors, and inductive sensors. This station performs the role of sorting parts by material type in the process of assembling a working industrial control valve.

The 87-MS4 is a mobile workstation with a slotted work surface that contains:

  • Operator station
  • Belt conveyor module
  • Part sorting module
  • Buffer module
  • Proximity sensing module
  • Parts set
  • Pneumatic distribution module
  • Electrical distribution module
  • Electro-pneumatic valve manifold
